About this course

Biomedicine and biomedical science is the study of human biology with a particular focus on health and disease. It encompasses the cellular and molecular processes that underlie health, the mechanisms by which those processes go wrong in disease, and the scientific approaches used to understand, diagnose, and treat conditions ranging from infectious diseases and cancer to genetic disorders and cardiovascular disease. The discipline provides the scientific foundation that links basic research to clinical medicine, and it is central to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare sectors.

At the University of East Anglia, this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, designed for students who need additional scientific preparation before entering the main degree. The foundation year builds the chemistry, biology, and mathematics foundations needed for degree-level biomedical science, ensuring that students entering with varied prior qualifications can succeed in the main programme. From the first year of the degree itself, you will study cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology, developing both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills.

UEA's strong medical school connection means the programme has a particularly well-developed translational dimension, connecting basic science to clinical application.

Laboratory work is central throughout, developing your experimental technique, your ability to analyse and interpret data, and your competence in the methods that biomedical researchers and clinical scientists use in practice.

Graduates from biomedical science programmes at UEA work in clinical laboratory science within the NHS, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, academic research, science communication, and related health professions. Many go on to postgraduate study in biomedical science, molecular medicine, clinical biochemistry, or related disciplines. UEA's medical school environment and its research culture make the programme a strong platform for careers at the interface of science and medicine.

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the integration between pre-clinical teaching and placements is well designed. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local…
