About this course

Biomedical sciences is the cluster of disciplines that bridges the gap between basic biological science and clinical medicine, studying the mechanisms of disease, the functioning of body systems, and the diagnostic and therapeutic tools that healthcare depends on. It is the scientific foundation of modern medicine and a field where new knowledge is accumulating rapidly, driven by advances in genomics, imaging, molecular biology, and data science.

At Newcastle University this three-year full-time programme has a deferred choice structure, which means you begin with a broad biomedical sciences curriculum before specialising in a particular area as the degree progresses. This allows you to make an informed choice about your specialism after experiencing the full range of the subject, rather than committing to a narrow focus before you know which area interests you most. You will study physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, and pathology, developing both scientific knowledge and the laboratory skills that are central to biomedical work.

The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional experience and international exposure alongside your academic studies.
