About this course

Biomedical science is the laboratory-based discipline that underpins modern healthcare, providing the analytical and diagnostic tools that clinicians depend on to investigate disease, monitor treatment and inform medical decisions. Biomedical scientists work across the full range of pathology disciplines, including haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology and immunology, applying scientific methods to human samples in ways that directly affect patient care. At the University of Gloucestershire, this four-year full-time programme with placement develops your knowledge and skills through a combination of interactive teaching, seminar-based discussion and hands-on laboratory work. Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council is required to practise as a biomedical scientist in the UK, and a degree accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science provides the academic foundation for that pathway. Graduates also work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical research, public health agencies and diagnostic technology firms.

Many go on to postgraduate study in biomedical science, clinical biochemistry, pathology, microbiology or research science, and the degree provides a strong platform for those considering graduate entry to medicine or other health professions.
