About this course

Biomedical Science is the scientific study of the human body in health and disease, examining the cellular, molecular and physiological mechanisms that underlie normal function and the disruptions that cause illness. It draws on biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology, haematology, pharmacology, and anatomy to build a comprehensive scientific picture of how the body works and how we can detect and understand when it does not. As a discipline, it sits at the heart of modern medicine, providing the evidence base for diagnosis, treatment, and the development of new therapies.

At the University of Sheffield, this three-year full-time programme takes a broad approach to biomedical science, moving from the level of genes and molecules through to whole-body systems and their integration. You will study molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, physiology, neuroscience, immunology, and the pathological processes that drive major diseases, developing both theoretical understanding and strong laboratory skills in the techniques that underpin modern biomedical research. A sandwich year gives you the opportunity to work in a pharmaceutical, clinical, or research laboratory before your final year, building professional experience and contacts in the sector.

A year abroad and work placement are also available, further broadening your experience.

Graduates of Biomedical Science programmes work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, NHS laboratories, academic research institutions, clinical research organisations, and regulatory bodies. Many pursue HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientists or go on to postgraduate study in areas such as medicine, clinical science, neuroscience, immunology, or drug discovery. The analytical laboratory skills and scientific understanding the degree develops are also valued in science communication, health policy, and education.
