About this course

Biomedical science is the discipline that applies biological and chemical knowledge to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease. At the University of Essex, the BSc Biomedical Science is a three-year full-time programme that develops the core scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills that biomedical scientists require across the range of clinical and research settings in which they work.

As the current programme description notes, the degree gives you key knowledge and modern strategies across the principal areas of biomedical science: immunology, microbiology, haematology, blood transfusion, cell pathology, and neurological disease mechanisms. You will develop a deep understanding of how the human body functions at the cellular and molecular level, how pathological processes disrupt normal function, and how laboratory investigations are used to diagnose and monitor disease. Practical laboratory sessions are central to the curriculum, developing the technical accuracy, attention to detail, and professional discipline that clinical laboratory work requires.

The programme also engages with the scientific research methods that generate new knowledge in the field, developing your ability to evaluate evidence critically and to understand how current clinical practice is grounded in prior research.

Biomedical science graduates work in the NHS, private healthcare, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and academic research. The most direct clinical pathway leads to registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council, which requires a degree from an IBMS-accredited programme and a period of supervised professional practice. NHS laboratories in haematology, clinical biochemistry, histopathology, blood transfusion, and medical microbiology all employ registered biomedical scientists.

The pharmaceutical and biotech industries offer roles in research, development, and quality control. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas of biomedical science, clinical research, or related health professions.
