About this course

Biomedical Science is the scientific discipline that bridges basic biological research and clinical healthcare, applying the methods of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and physiology to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Biomedical scientists work in NHS and private laboratories, analysing blood and tissue samples, running diagnostic tests, and contributing to the evidence base that guides clinical decisions. The profession is regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and a well-structured degree is the foundation for registration and practice.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time programme develops the scientific knowledge and laboratory skills needed to work as a biomedical scientist. You will study haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, immunology, and medical genetics, learning both the theoretical principles that underpin each discipline and the practical techniques used in diagnostic laboratories. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements, giving you an unusually rich set of professional and international experiences alongside your academic studies.

Work placements in clinical or research laboratories are particularly important in biomedical science, where practical competence in laboratory techniques is as important as theoretical knowledge for professional registration and employment.

Leeds Beckett's programme is developed in relation to the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) standards, which govern the professional education of biomedical scientists in the UK. The connection to NHS laboratory practice is reflected throughout the curriculum.

Graduates pursue careers as registered biomedical scientists in NHS hospital laboratories, private pathology services, research institutions, and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Many go on to IBMS registration and specialty qualifications. Some pursue postgraduate study in clinical or research directions.

The sandwich year and year abroad make this programme a particularly well-rounded preparation for professional practice.
