About this course

Biomedical science is the scientific discipline that provides the evidence base for modern medicine. It applies the methods and knowledge of biology, chemistry, and physiology to understand how the human body functions in health and how it fails in disease, and it encompasses the laboratory sciences that underpin clinical diagnosis, from haematology and microbiology to clinical biochemistry and immunology. Biomedical scientists are essential members of the healthcare workforce, providing the analytical results on which clinical decisions depend, and the research they conduct drives progress in our understanding and treatment of disease.

At Abertay University, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study biomedical science in an international context and develop a global perspective on how healthcare science is practised and developed. The typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the high academic standards expected of students entering a programme that leads to a professional healthcare qualification. You will study the core biomedical sciences, including cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, haematology, immunology, clinical biochemistry, and pathology, developing both scientific understanding and the laboratory skills needed for professional practice.

The year abroad enriches your education with international experience and the exposure to different healthcare systems and research traditions that can be genuinely formative for a scientific career.

Graduates of accredited biomedical science programmes are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as biomedical scientists. Career opportunities exist in NHS hospital laboratories, independent healthcare laboratories, blood transfusion services, research and development in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, and public health agencies. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in biomedical science, molecular biology, clinical research, or related fields, which supports progression into research careers, specialist clinical roles, or scientific leadership.

Abertay's applied approach and the distinctive international dimension of this programme prepare graduates well for both clinical and research careers in a global healthcare environment.
