About this course

Biomedical engineering applies engineering principles and methods to medicine and biology, developing the devices, diagnostics, and therapeutic systems that modern healthcare depends on. It encompasses a remarkably wide range of applications, from imaging systems such as MRI and ultrasound to prosthetics and implants, from biosensors and wearable monitoring devices to surgical robots and tissue engineering scaffolds. The discipline requires you to understand both the engineering sciences and the biological and physiological systems those technologies interact with, making it one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary fields in higher education.

At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time BEng gives you a broad and rigorous grounding in biomedical engineering principles alongside the practical skills needed to work in a healthcare technology environment. You will study the fundamentals of electronics, materials science, and engineering design alongside physiology, biomechanics, and the regulatory and ethical frameworks that govern medical device development. Laboratory and project work runs throughout the degree, giving you experience of designing, building, and testing systems that must meet the demanding standards of clinical applications.

The programme prepares you for a field in which innovation is driven by close collaboration between engineers, clinicians, and scientists.

Biomedical engineering graduates are in strong demand across the medical devices and healthcare technology sectors. Graduate roles include medical devices engineer, clinical engineer, research and development engineer, and biomedical scientist. Many graduates work within the NHS in clinical engineering departments, supporting and developing the equipment used in patient care.

Others work for medical technology companies developing new diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in biomedical engineering, medical physics, or clinical research, and for doctoral research developing the next generation of medical technologies. Chartered engineer status is achievable through the relevant professional bodies following appropriate experience.
