About this course

Biomaterials engineering is concerned with the design and development of materials that interact with biological systems, particularly for use in medical devices, implants, and tissue engineering applications. It is a discipline where materials science, engineering, biology, and medicine converge, asking how materials can be designed to be biocompatible, to support the repair or replacement of damaged tissues, and to function reliably within the complex biochemical environment of the human body. As medical technology advances and the demand for sophisticated implants and regenerative treatments grows, the expertise of biomaterials engineers is increasingly important.

This four-year, full-time MEng programme at Loughborough is delivered within the Department of Materials, building on the university's strengths in both materials science and the biological sciences. You will study the structure and properties of engineering materials, the biological context in which biomaterials function, the design of medical devices and implants, regulatory and ethical frameworks for medical technology, and the characterisation and testing methods used to evaluate biomaterial performance. The programme develops both the engineering rigour and the biomedical understanding needed to work at this interdisciplinary frontier.

Graduates of biomaterials engineering programmes work in the medical devices and healthcare technology sector, in research and development for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, in academic and clinical research, and in regulatory affairs for organisations bringing medical products to market. The MEng qualification is recognised by the Engineering Council as meeting the academic requirements for chartered engineer status. Roles in device development, materials testing, biomechanics, tissue engineering research, and clinical engineering are typical career destinations.

Further study at postgraduate level in biomaterials, biomedical engineering, or tissue engineering is an option for those who wish to develop specialist research expertise.
