Biology with Science Foundation Year

Biology is the science of life in all its extraordinary diversity and complexity, from the molecular machinery inside cells to the ecology of entire ecosystems. It investigates how living organisms are structured, how they function, how they develop and reproduce, how they interact with each other and with their environments, and how they have evolved over billions of years from common ancestors. No other science spans such a range of scales and phenomena, or touches so directly on the questions that most affect human beings: health and disease, agriculture and food, biodiversity and conservation, and the nature of life itself.

At the University of Lincoln, the four-year full-time degree includes a science foundation year, which provides a thorough grounding in the biological and chemical sciences for students entering without the standard entry qualifications or who want additional preparation before beginning the full programme. You will study cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, evolution and biochemistry, developing both the conceptual understanding and the practical laboratory skills that biology demands. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial opportunities to develop professional experience and international perspectives before graduation.

Graduates of biology degrees work in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, conservation, environmental consultancy, education, science communication, public health, agricultural science and food technology. Many go on to postgraduate study at masters or doctoral level in biology, biochemistry, ecology, genetics or a related field, and a doctoral degree is the standard route into academic research and many senior research positions in industry.
