About this course

Biology with biotechnology combines the broad scientific study of living systems with a focused engagement with the applied technologies that use those systems to create products and processes of value to medicine, agriculture, and industry. Biology provides the foundational knowledge of cells, genetics, evolution, physiology, and ecology that underpins all life science. Biotechnology extends that knowledge into practice, examining how living organisms and biological processes are harnessed to produce pharmaceuticals, diagnostic tools, biofuels, and modified organisms with enhanced characteristics.

At Bangor University, which sits in North Wales with access to exceptional natural environments alongside well-equipped laboratory facilities, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of biological science alongside the techniques and applications of modern biotechnology. You will study cell and molecular biology, genetics and genomics, microbiology, biochemistry, and the specific methods used in biotechnological research and production, including techniques such as recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, fermentation, and genetic modification. A foundation year is available for students who need to build their scientific grounding, a sandwich year places you in a professional environment for an extended period, a year abroad broadens your experience, and work placement experience runs throughout the programme.

Graduates from biology with biotechnology programmes work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, research institutions, the NHS, environmental consultancies, food and agricultural science organisations, and government regulatory bodies. Roles in research and development, quality assurance, technical sales, and regulatory affairs are all common pathways. Postgraduate study in biotechnology, molecular biology, genomics, and biomedical science is a natural next step for those who wish to move into research or senior technical roles.

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the c…

Genuinely worthwhile
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost of living is m…
