About this course

Biology is the study of life in all its forms, from the biochemistry of single cells to the ecology of entire biospheres. It is a discipline that encompasses enormous range, spanning molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, physiology, evolutionary biology, and ecology, and one that has been transformed in recent decades by advances in genomics, computational biology, and environmental science. At its heart, biology is concerned with understanding how living organisms are built, how they function, how they change over time, and how they relate to their environments and to each other.

At the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, you will study Biology over three years, full time. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you significant real-world and international experience woven into your degree. These structured opportunities allow you to apply your scientific knowledge in research, conservation, industrial, or clinical settings, and to bring that experience back to enrich your studies.

You will build a broad understanding of biological sciences across all levels of organisation, developing laboratory skills in molecular and cellular techniques alongside fieldwork skills for ecological and environmental study. Quantitative skills, including statistics and data analysis, are central to modern biology, and the programme develops your competence in handling and interpreting biological data. You will engage with current debates and discoveries in the life sciences, from genome editing and synthetic biology to climate change ecology and biodiversity conservation.

Biology graduates pursue diverse careers in research, healthcare, conservation, biotechnology, environmental consultancy, education, and science policy. The life sciences and pharmaceutical industries employ large numbers of biology graduates, as do hospitals, public health organisations, and environmental agencies. Teaching at secondary and further education level is another significant route.

Many graduates continue into postgraduate study in biology, ecology, genetics, biochemistry, medicine, or veterinary science, with research doctorates providing entry into academic and advanced research careers.
