About this course

Biology is the science of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery of individual cells to the complex interactions of ecosystems spanning continents. It seeks to understand how organisms are built, how they function, how they reproduce and evolve, and how they relate to one another and to their environment. As a discipline it has never been more relevant: biological knowledge underpins medicine, conservation, agriculture, biotechnology, and our responses to some of the most urgent challenges facing the planet.

At the University of Bath, the BSc in Biology runs over three years full-time and provides a thorough grounding in the core areas of the subject before allowing you to pursue depth in the areas that most interest you. In your final year you will undertake a capstone project and a grand challenge unit that asks you to engage with problems that extend beyond the boundaries of any single sub-discipline. You will then choose from a wide range of optional units covering areas such as evolution, ecology and conservation, infectious diseases, developmental biology, and mathematics, or branching into areas such as entrepreneurial biotechnology, science communication, and business strategy.

This breadth of choice in the later stages of the degree means you can tailor your education to your interests and your career goals.

Throughout the degree you will develop laboratory skills alongside theoretical understanding, learning to design experiments, gather and analyse data, and communicate findings clearly. Bath has a strong research culture and well-resourced teaching facilities, and the programme reflects the university's commitment to practical, applied learning alongside academic rigour.

Biology graduates go on to careers in research, healthcare, conservation, environmental management, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical industries, science communication, teaching, and policy. The degree is also a strong preparation for postgraduate study in biological sciences, biomedical research, ecology, or related fields.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit othe…
