Biology

Biology is the science of life in all its forms, from the molecular mechanisms of genetics and cell biology to the ecological relationships between organisms and their environments. It encompasses the study of the structure and function of living systems at every scale: how cells carry out the chemical reactions of life, how tissues and organs develop and function in complex organisms, how populations and species evolve over time, and how ecosystems are organised and maintained. Biology is both a fundamental science and the foundation for applied fields including medicine, agriculture, conservation, and biotechnology.

The Open University offers biology through part-time distance learning, making it accessible to students who cannot attend campus-based study, including those managing work, family responsibilities, or other commitments. You will study cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, physiology, and microbiology, developing both theoretical understanding and the ability to interpret and evaluate scientific data. Laboratory and fieldwork kits allow you to engage with practical science elements in your own environment, and the programme develops the scientific literacy and analytical skills that are central to a biology education.

Graduates of biology degrees work in the life sciences industry, healthcare, environmental science, education, conservation, and research. The flexibility of the OU route means that many students are already working in relevant fields and use the degree to formalise and deepen their knowledge. Postgraduate study in biology, ecology, biomedicine, or related disciplines is a further option.
