About this course

Biology is the science of life in all its forms, exploring how living systems work from the molecular level upwards to the complexity of whole organisms and the ecosystems they inhabit. It is a discipline of extraordinary breadth and intellectual richness, encompassing cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, evolutionary biology and much more, and it addresses some of the most important questions facing human society, from understanding and treating disease to managing the biodiversity crisis and responding to climate change.

At Aberystwyth University this four-year programme includes a foundation year that prepares you for degree-level study, making the degree accessible to students who need to develop their scientific background before beginning the main programme. You will explore the full range of biological scales, from proteins and molecular mechanisms at the cellular level through to whole organisms and their ecology. Aberystwyth's location provides an exceptional natural environment for biological fieldwork, and the practical and field-based components of the degree take advantage of the diverse habitats and wildlife of mid-Wales.

Biology graduates work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, environmental consultancies, conservation organisations, NHS laboratory services, government agencies, education, science communication and research. The broad scientific foundation the degree provides is valued across all life sciences sectors and also in the many roles outside science where the analytical and problem-solving skills of a biology graduate transfer well. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in a specialist area of biology or a related discipline, building deeper expertise in ecology, molecular biology, physiology, genetics or conservation on the foundation the undergraduate degree provides.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local co…

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cos…
