Biology and Geography

Biology and geography together address the living world and the physical and human environments in which life is embedded. Biology investigates life at every scale of organisation, from the molecular processes inside cells through the physiology of individual organisms to the population dynamics and ecosystem relationships of the natural world. Geography brings a spatial and environmental perspective, examining how physical landscapes are formed and transformed, how human societies interact with their environments, and how the distribution of life, resources, and hazard shapes human experience and vice versa.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree combines both disciplines with the depth the MA (Hons) format implies, and includes a year abroad.

You will develop a scientific grounding in biological and geographical inquiry, working with data from fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and computational tools to ask and answer questions that neither discipline could address alone. Biological topics might span molecular genetics, animal behaviour, conservation, and marine biology, while geography contributes environmental science, geomorphology, and the analysis of how human activity shapes and is shaped by the natural world.
