About this course

Biological sciences with professional studies is an extended degree at master's level that combines a comprehensive undergraduate training in the biosciences with a professional studies component designed to deepen your scientific expertise and employability. Biology as a discipline spans an extraordinary range, from the molecular mechanisms of gene expression and cellular function through the physiology of organisms to the ecology of populations and ecosystems. The MSci route gives you greater depth and the opportunity to develop at a more advanced level before entering the profession.

At Queen's University of Belfast the programme runs over four years full time, covering biological diversity, systematics and conservation, cell and tissue structure and physiology, ecology and animal behaviour, the form and function of microorganisms, fungi, plants and animals, and genetics and evolutionary mechanisms. Professional studies are integrated throughout, developing the skills in research, communication and professional practice that employers in industry, government and research institutions value. You will develop both broad scientific literacy and the depth of expertise the MSci qualification represents.

Biological sciences graduates at master's level are well placed for careers in research and development in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, environmental consultancy, conservation, wildlife management, government agencies, healthcare, food science and education. The MSci qualification is particularly valued for entry into research careers, including PhD programmes, and for roles in industry where advanced scientific training is a prerequisite. Postgraduate opportunities in specialised areas of biology, ecology, genetics or biomedical science are open to graduates who wish to develop deeper expertise.
