About this course

Biological sciences is the study of living organisms at every level of organisation, from molecules and cells through to ecosystems and the biosphere. It encompasses genetics, cell biology, microbiology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and physiology, and it addresses questions of fundamental importance not only to academic science but to medicine, agriculture, environmental management, and the biotechnology industries. The field is advancing rapidly as new technologies, from genomic sequencing and gene editing to satellite tracking and computational modelling, extend what biologists can observe and understand.

At the University of Surrey, the biological sciences programme prepares you for the future by integrating AI and digital skills alongside rigorous scientific training, building the confidence and technical competency that employers in the life sciences increasingly value. You will study the core disciplines of biology, developing your knowledge of living systems from the molecular level upwards and your capacity to investigate biological questions using experimental and analytical methods. The programme runs over three years full-time.

Graduates of biological sciences degrees pursue careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, healthcare, environmental science, conservation, scientific research, food science, and science communication. The analytical and quantitative skills the degree develops are also valued in data-driven roles beyond the life sciences. Many graduates go on to postgraduate research in specific areas of biology, or to professional qualifications in medicine, dentistry, teaching, or environmental practice, where a strong biological sciences foundation is essential preparation.
