About this course

Biological sciences is a broad and integrative discipline that encompasses the study of life at every level of organisation, from molecules and cells to organisms, populations, and ecosystems. It draws on chemistry, physics, and mathematics to understand the processes that underpin living systems, and it addresses questions of fundamental importance to medicine, agriculture, environmental management, and our understanding of the natural world. The discipline has never been more dynamic, as advances in genomics, molecular biology, and computational biology are transforming what biologists can ask and answer.

At the University of Essex, you will begin with a broad foundation in your first year, gaining insights across cell and molecular biology, genetics, ecology, and evolution. In your second and final years, you have the freedom to deepen your knowledge across disciplines or to specialise in an area of your choosing, from molecular and cell biology through to ecology and conservation biology. This flexibility allows you to shape the degree around your interests and aspirations while building the research skills and scientific literacy that are central to the discipline.

The programme runs over three years full-time.

Graduates of biological sciences degrees pursue careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, healthcare, environmental consultancy, conservation, scientific publishing, the food industry, and government agencies. The scientific reasoning and quantitative skills the degree develops are also valued in roles beyond the life sciences, including management consultancy, finance, and science communication. Many graduates go on to postgraduate research in specific areas of biology, or to professional qualifications in areas such as medicine, dentistry, or teaching.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student …
