About this course

Biological sciences is the broad study of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery of the cell to the ecology of entire ecosystems. It is one of the most expansive of scientific disciplines, encompassing genetics, evolution, physiology, microbiology, cell biology, ecology, and neuroscience, among many other specialisms. What unites the field is a set of core principles, most notably the theory of evolution by natural selection and the central dogma of molecular biology, that provide the conceptual framework within which all of life's diversity can be understood.

The discipline is also one of the most practically significant, underpinning medicine, agriculture, conservation, biotechnology, and environmental management.

At the University of East Anglia you will study this three-year full-time degree with a typical entry tariff of 120 points. UEA has strong research strengths in ecology, evolutionary biology, and molecular life sciences, and the programme gives you a broad foundation before allowing you to develop depth in areas that interest you most. You will study cell biology and biochemistry alongside ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, and physiology, developing both the conceptual understanding and the practical laboratory skills that biology requires.

Fieldwork, data analysis, and scientific communication are woven throughout the programme, preparing you for the realities of scientific work whether in a laboratory, in the field, or at a desk.

Biological sciences graduates work across an exceptionally wide range of sectors. Careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in environmental consultancy and conservation, in healthcare science, in food science, in teaching, and in scientific communication are all common. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, whether to pursue a master's degree in a specific area such as ecology, genetics, or microbiology, or to undertake a PhD in an area of biological research.

The quantitative and laboratory skills developed during the degree are also valued in medical research, public health, and the life sciences industry.
