About this course

Biological sciences is the study of life in all its forms, from the molecular mechanisms inside cells to the behaviour and ecology of organisms in their environments. It is one of the broadest and most important of the natural sciences, drawing on chemistry, physics, and mathematics to understand the processes that characterise living systems and the diversity of life on Earth. A foundation in biological sciences provides the basis for careers and further study across a very wide range of specialist fields, from medicine and public health to conservation, biotechnology, and environmental management.

At Queen's University Belfast, this two-year full-time programme provides students with knowledge and understanding of the scientific methods and theoretical principles of biological sciences, including the application of those principles in professional contexts. You will develop understanding of the relevance of biological sciences in the current economic environment, the hierarchical nature of the discipline from molecular level through to whole organism and species interactions, and the practical techniques that contemporary biological science requires. The programme is designed to develop a professional approach to work, study, and lifelong learning in the biological sciences.

You will develop laboratory skills, scientific reasoning, an understanding of biological systems across different scales, and the professional awareness needed to work in biological and related fields.

Graduates pursue careers in laboratory science, environmental monitoring, healthcare support, agriculture, conservation, and biotechnology, and many continue to further study in biological sciences, ecology, biomedical science, or related disciplines. The broad scientific foundation of the programme equips graduates for a range of roles in the life sciences sector.
