About this course

Biological sciences is a broad discipline that encompasses the study of life in its astonishing diversity, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the dynamics of entire ecosystems and the evolutionary history that connects every living organism to every other. It draws on chemistry, physics, mathematics, and statistics to investigate biological processes with rigour and precision, and it has never been more relevant: from climate change and biodiversity loss to synthetic biology and the development of new medicines, the questions that biologists address are central to the future of our planet and our species.

At Queen Mary, University of London, this four-year full-time programme is designed to produce the next generation of scientists who will carry out research, find solutions, and create change to preserve our world. You will study across the breadth of the biological sciences, including cell and molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, physiology, and the analytical and laboratory methods that underpin them all. The degree provides a broad platform from which you can develop specialist interests as the programme progresses, and the research environment at Queen Mary means you will encounter current scientific questions alongside foundational knowledge.

Graduates of biological sciences programmes pursue careers in research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, conservation and environmental management, healthcare, science communication, and teaching. The quantitative and analytical training the degree provides is also valued in data science, consultancy, and policy roles. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in biology, ecology, genetics, biochemistry, or related life sciences, where the breadth of an undergraduate biological sciences degree is a considerable asset.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if…
