About this course

Biological sciences encompasses the full breadth of life on Earth, from the molecular mechanisms within cells to the dynamics of ecosystems, from the physiology of individual organisms to the processes of evolution across geological time. It is a discipline that underpins medicine, agriculture, conservation, biotechnology, and our fundamental understanding of what life is and how it works. A biological sciences degree develops scientific rigour, experimental skills, and the capacity to engage with one of the most rapidly evolving fields of human knowledge.

At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year full-time programme is designed to give you a strong foundation in the fundamental principles of the biological sciences before allowing you to direct your studies toward the areas that interest you most. You will begin with the building blocks: cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and biochemistry, developing the conceptual and laboratory skills that underpin all of modern biology. As the course progresses, you will have the flexibility to focus on areas such as microbiology, environmental biology, physiology, or biochemistry, tailoring your degree to your emerging interests and career aspirations.

A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to study biological sciences in a different academic and natural environment, encountering ecosystems, research traditions, and approaches that you would not encounter at home.

You will develop strong laboratory skills, competence in data analysis and scientific writing, and the ability to design and evaluate biological investigations, alongside the critical scientific thinking that a research-active discipline demands.

Graduates of biological sciences go on to careers in biomedical research, environmental consultancy, conservation, healthcare science, education, science communication, and biotechnology. Many pursue postgraduate study in biology, ecology, genetics, biomedical science, or graduate-entry medicine. The breadth of the degree makes it genuinely versatile, opening career paths wherever biological knowledge is valued.
