About this course

Biological sciences is one of the broadest and most dynamic scientific disciplines, encompassing the study of living organisms from the molecular to the ecosystem level. It draws on chemistry, physics, mathematics and increasingly on computing to understand the mechanisms of life: how cells function, how organisms develop, how species evolve, how ecosystems are structured, and how the human body interacts with its environment in health and disease. It is a field advancing with extraordinary speed, driven by technologies like genomics, bioinformatics and synthetic biology, and it is central to medicine, agriculture, conservation, biotechnology and our understanding of the living world.

At Loughborough University, this four-year full-time degree offers a broad and rigorous education in the life sciences alongside the technical and analytical skills that underpin modern biological research. You will study cell and molecular biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, evolution and the scientific methods used to investigate biological questions, developing both theoretical depth and practical laboratory competence. The four-year structure allows for progression from foundational content to increasing specialisation and independent research, with a final-year project or dissertation that demonstrates your capacity for original inquiry.

A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in another leading biological science environment and to broaden your scientific and personal horizons.

Loughborough's science programmes benefit from good research facilities and a culture that takes student learning and professional development seriously.

Graduates from biological sciences degrees move into research and development in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical and medical research, environmental science, conservation, ecology, teaching, science communication, public health, food science, and academic research. Postgraduate study, including master's degrees and PhD programmes, is a natural pathway for those who want to pursue research careers or specialist expertise in a particular area of biology.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is a brilli…

Worth it overall
Would I choose it again? Probably yes, with caveats. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links m…
