About this course

Bioengineering applies the principles and methods of engineering to the study and design of biological systems, and to the development of devices and technologies that interact with living organisms. It is a discipline that connects the mathematical and physical rigour of engineering with the complexity and creativity of biology, and it is driving some of the most exciting and consequential developments in modern medicine and biotechnology, from implantable devices and artificial organs to diagnostic systems, prosthetics, and regenerative medicine.

At Loughborough University this four-year, full-time programme with a foundation year is designed primarily for students who have not studied all the prerequisite subjects for direct first-year entry, who have not met their expected entrance requirements due to adverse situations or prior sporting commitments, or who are mature students returning to education or care leavers. The foundation year provides the mathematical, physical, and biological grounding needed to enter the full bioengineering curriculum with confidence, and it is designed with genuine support and care for the diverse backgrounds of the students it serves. The degree years then develop your knowledge of engineering mechanics, biology, materials science, biomechanics, physiology, and the design and analysis of biomedical systems.

Graduates of bioengineering go on to careers in the medical technology industry, in hospitals and clinical engineering departments, in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and in research institutions. Many move into roles in the design, development, and testing of medical devices, from diagnostic equipment and surgical instruments to implants and wearable technology. Others work in rehabilitation engineering, biomechanics research, tissue engineering, or the regulatory and quality assurance functions that bring biomedical products to market safely.

Many graduates pursue further professional development through postgraduate study, aiming for chartered engineer status and specialist expertise in a particular area of biomedical engineering or medical technology.
