About this course

Biochemistry investigates life at the molecular level, examining the structures and functions of the biological molecules that constitute living organisms, and the chemical processes that allow those organisms to grow, respond to their environments, and reproduce. It occupies the junction between biology and chemistry, using the methods and concepts of both to understand phenomena ranging from enzyme catalysis and DNA replication to signal transduction and cell death. As our ability to investigate and manipulate these processes has expanded, biochemistry has become one of the most consequential and rapidly developing of the life sciences.

At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time Biochemistry degree with a placement year takes you deeply into the molecular world of life, examining the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids, how gene expression is controlled, how membranes, antibodies, and hormones operate, and how cells function within multicellular organisms. The placement year provides a full year of professional experience in a research or industrial biochemistry setting before you return to complete your final year, which is central to developing the applied skills and professional maturity that employers in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and research settings value. A year abroad is also incorporated, broadening your international experience alongside the placement.

Biochemistry graduates from Warwick with placement experience are well placed for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in academic and clinical research, and in the wide range of roles that require sophisticated scientific understanding combined with laboratory expertise. Drug discovery, protein engineering, genomics, clinical trials, regulatory science, and bioprocessing are among the well-established destinations. Many graduates go on to doctoral research, with the placement providing an advantage in competitive applications.

Postgraduate study in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a clinical health science is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop further expertise.
