About this course

Biochemistry is the science of life at the molecular level. It asks how the chemical processes in living cells create and sustain life, how genes are expressed and regulated, how enzymes catalyse the reactions that underlie metabolism, and how molecular defects give rise to disease. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of chemistry and biology, and it provides the intellectual foundation for some of the most significant advances in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology.

At the University of East Anglia you will study across four years on a full-time programme. This degree includes a year abroad, expanding your academic experience to an international context and allowing you to engage with biochemistry research and teaching in another country. You will explore aspects of life from molecules to cells, from tissues to organisms, moving between the foundational chemistry of biological molecules and the complex regulatory networks that govern cellular behaviour.

The curriculum covers molecular biology, genetics, protein structure and function, metabolism, and the biochemical basis of disease, alongside laboratory training in the techniques that modern biochemistry depends on, from spectroscopy and chromatography to gene editing and cell culture. UEA has a strong research environment in biological sciences, and you will learn from research scientists who are active specialists in their fields, bringing current discovery directly into your teaching.

Biochemistry graduates are in demand across the life sciences industry. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors are major employers, recruiting graduates for roles in drug discovery, research and development, clinical research, and quality assurance. Medical research charities, university research groups, and government scientific agencies are further significant employers.

Analytical roles in food science, environmental testing, and forensic science draw on the laboratory skills the degree develops. Many graduates proceed to postgraduate study, either a PhD for those wishing to pursue research, or professional programmes in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, or scientific management.
