About this course

Biochemistry is the chemistry of life. It is concerned with the molecular processes that occur within living organisms, from the replication of DNA and the translation of genetic information into proteins, to the metabolic pathways that generate energy and the signalling systems that allow cells to communicate and respond to their environment. Understanding these processes at the sub-cellular and molecular level is fundamental to modern medicine, pharmacology, agricultural science and biotechnology, and biochemistry sits at the heart of many of the most significant scientific advances of the past century.

At Swansea this four-year programme includes a dedicated placement year, providing you with an extended period of professional experience in a research, clinical or industrial setting alongside your academic studies. You will study the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids, enzyme kinetics, metabolic biochemistry, molecular genetics, cell biology and the research techniques, including gel electrophoresis, chromatography, spectroscopy and molecular cloning, that modern biochemical research depends on. The placement year is a significant feature of the programme, allowing you to apply laboratory skills in a professional context and to develop the independence, problem-solving ability and practical competence that employers and postgraduate supervisors value.
