About this course

Biochemistry is the chemistry of living systems, concerned with the molecular structures and chemical processes that underlie all biological phenomena. It asks how proteins are built and how they function as enzymes, receptors, and structural materials; how DNA encodes, expresses, and replicates genetic information; how energy is generated and used in cells; and how signalling molecules coordinate the activities of tissues and organisms. These questions sit at the heart of modern medicine, biotechnology, and life science research, making biochemistry one of the most dynamic and practically consequential of the sciences.

At the University of Keele, this three-year full-time BSc explores some of the most exciting areas of twenty-first century life science and medical research, from genomics and molecular medicine to the individually tailored therapies that are beginning to emerge from understanding the molecular basis of disease. You will develop skills in laboratory techniques, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication, working in state-of-the-art facilities. The degree integrates employability modules throughout, ensuring that your professional development runs parallel to your scientific training.

A sandwich year with work placement provides a substantial period of real research or industrial experience, while the option of a year abroad extends your scientific exposure internationally. Work placement is embedded as a core feature, giving you direct professional experience in a research, clinical, or industrial context.

Biochemistry graduates are in strong and consistent demand across the life sciences, healthcare, and biotechnology sectors.
