About this course

Biochemistry is the molecular science of life. It studies the chemical processes and substances that occur within living organisms, from the way proteins are built and fold into functional shapes to the mechanisms by which DNA is copied and read, and from the metabolic pathways that power cells to the signalling cascades that coordinate organ function. Understanding these processes is fundamental to biology and medicine: most of what happens inside a living cell is biochemistry, and breakthroughs in drug discovery, diagnostics, and biotechnology all ultimately depend on biochemical knowledge.

At the University of Bristol, this three-year full-time degree immerses you in research-led biochemistry, developing high-level analytical and problem-solving skills alongside deep subject knowledge. You will engage with contemporary topics including molecular genetics, immunology, synthetic biology, drug discovery, recombinant engineering, enzymology, cancer cell biology, developmental biology, and neurobiochemistry, ensuring that your education reflects the state of the field rather than its established textbook content.
