About this course

Biochemistry is the science of life at the molecular level. It asks how living cells build and break down the molecules they need to function, how genetic information is stored and expressed, and how the chemical processes underlying growth, metabolism, and disease actually work. As a discipline it sits at the junction of biology and chemistry, and its findings have transformed medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology over the last century.

Understanding biochemistry means understanding the mechanisms behind almost everything a cell does.

At the University of Huddersfield, this programme is available with a foundation year for students who need to build or consolidate their scientific grounding before entering the main degree. The full-time course also includes a sandwich year with work placement opportunities, giving you the chance to spend time in an industrial or research setting before you graduate. You will study the chemistry of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates, as well as enzyme kinetics, cell signalling, gene expression, and metabolism.

Laboratory work is central throughout, developing your practical skills in techniques used across the biological sciences.
