About this course

Biochemistry is the science that examines living processes at the molecular and cellular level, asking how biological molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates and their many derivatives perform the chemical reactions that make life possible. It sits at the intersection of chemistry and biology, and it provides the molecular foundation for medicine, pharmacology, genetics, neuroscience, nutrition and environmental science. Understanding how enzymes catalyse reactions, how genes are expressed, how signals are transduced between cells, and how metabolic pathways are regulated is understanding life at its most fundamental level.

At the University of East Anglia you will immerse yourself in the wonder of biological organisms and processes at the molecular level, studying under research scientists who are specialists in the areas you explore. You will move from molecules to cells, from tissues to organisms, developing both the conceptual framework and the practical laboratory skills that biochemical research and industry require. The three-year full-time programme gives you depth across the core disciplines of biochemistry, developing your ability to design and carry out experiments, interpret data, and evaluate scientific literature critically.

Biochemistry graduates are in demand across a wide range of scientific sectors. Pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, clinical research organisations, food and nutrition companies, environmental and agricultural science, and academic and medical research institutions all employ biochemists. Roles include research scientist, laboratory analyst, clinical trials coordinator, regulatory affairs specialist, and scientific writer.

Many graduates go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, pharmacology, or related fields, building on the strong scientific foundation the degree provides. The analytical, quantitative and problem-solving skills biochemistry develops are also valued in data science, science policy, intellectual property law, and science communication.
