About this course

Medicine is a vocation and a science, a discipline that demands both extensive technical knowledge of the human body and its diseases and the communication, ethical reasoning, and clinical judgement that patient care requires. Medical education prepares you to diagnose, manage, and care for patients across the full range of conditions that a doctor encounters, developing the scientific foundations of medical practice alongside the professional skills and personal attributes that responsible clinical work demands. It is one of the most rigorous and demanding of degree programmes, and one of the most consequential.

At Edge Hill University you will study this five-year full-time Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree, designed to prepare you for provisional registration as a doctor with the General Medical Council on completion. The programme integrates scientific learning with clinical experience from an early stage, ensuring that you develop as a doctor rather than simply as a student of biological science. You will study anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, and the clinical medicine of each of the major body systems, alongside communication skills, professional ethics, evidence-based medicine, and the public health dimensions of clinical practice.

Clinical placements run throughout the programme, giving you supervised patient contact in hospitals, general practice, and community settings.

Medical graduates apply for foundation training, entering a two-year structured programme that prepares them for specialty training in a chosen field. The range of medical and surgical specialties is broad, from general practice, paediatrics, psychiatry, and emergency medicine to cardiology, oncology, surgery, and many others. The analytical and scientific skills developed through medicine are also valued in medical education, health policy, medical research, global health, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Medicine from Edge Hill is a newer programme that has been designed with a strong focus on professional practice and community-based clinical experience.
