About this course

Automotive engineering is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of engineering practice. The shift from internal combustion to electric powertrains, the development of autonomous driving systems, and the pressure to reduce the carbon footprint of personal transport are reshaping the technical skills the industry needs and the careers it offers. An automotive engineering degree prepares you for that changing landscape, combining rigorous engineering fundamentals with specialist knowledge of vehicle systems and the emerging technologies that are transforming them.

At the University of Brighton, the four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides a thorough grounding in engineering mathematics, physical science and technical skills for students who need additional preparation before beginning the full degree. You will study vehicle dynamics, powertrain engineering, chassis design, aerodynamics, embedded systems and the principles of electric and hybrid propulsion. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in an automotive or engineering environment before graduation.

The degree prepares you for careers in vehicle design and development, electric mobility, autonomous systems engineering, powertrain engineering, manufacturing, testing and sustainable transport innovation. The automotive supply chain, including component manufacturers, software developers and systems integrators, also employs engineering graduates in significant numbers.

Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Postgraduate study in automotive engineering, electric vehicle technology or mechanical engineering is a natural continuation for those who want to specialise further or move into research.
