About this course

Astrophysics asks the grandest questions that science can pose. How did the universe begin, how has it evolved, and what is its ultimate fate? What are the physical processes that power stars, shape galaxies, and produce phenomena as extreme as black holes and gravitational waves?

What conditions exist on worlds beyond our solar system, and could any of them support life? These are not merely philosophical questions; they are the subjects of active research programmes using the most sophisticated instruments humanity has ever built. Astrophysics is the discipline that brings mathematics, physics and observational astronomy together to address them.

At the University of Keele, this four-year programme gives you a solid theoretical and practical foundation in astrophysics, building from the core principles of physics into the specialised knowledge needed to understand extrasolar planets, stellar evolution, cosmology and the observation of gravitational wave events. You will develop advanced quantitative skills and gain experience in data analysis, computational modelling and the interpretation of observational data. A year abroad is built into the programme, allowing you to study in a different research environment and broaden both your scientific and personal horizons.

The programme is designed with an eye towards employability and research, equipping you with the professional and practical skills that are valued both in academic science and in a wide range of technical industries.

Many astrophysics graduates pursue doctoral research, which leads into careers in university research, space agencies and observatories.
