About this course

Artificial intelligence is the branch of computer science concerned with building systems that can perform tasks which would normally require human intelligence: recognising images and speech, understanding and generating language, making decisions from data, and navigating complex environments. It is one of the most rapidly advancing areas in technology, with applications reaching into healthcare, finance, transport, education, scientific research, and virtually every sector of modern life. Understanding how these systems work, how to build them, and how to deploy them responsibly has become one of the most sought-after capabilities in the global economy.

Northumbria University's three-year full-time Artificial Intelligence programme gives you a solid foundation in the mathematics and computer science that underpin AI, alongside hands-on experience building and evaluating AI systems. You will study machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, data representation, and the ethical frameworks that govern the responsible development and use of AI. Programming skills, particularly in Python and the key AI and data science libraries, are developed throughout the programme, and you will build the ability to implement, test, and critically evaluate AI solutions.

The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, meaning you will gain substantial professional experience in AI-related roles and study in an international context before graduation. These experiences are particularly valuable in AI, where the pace of development means that exposure to industry practice is as important as theoretical foundations.
