About this course

Artificial intelligence and data science is one of the most rapidly developing and economically significant disciplines in higher education today. AI is transforming how organisations make decisions, how products are designed, how diseases are diagnosed, how vehicles navigate, and how scientific research is conducted. Data science provides the methodological foundation: collecting, processing, analysing, and interpreting large and complex datasets to generate insight.

Together, AI and data science form a field that demands both mathematical rigour and practical engineering skill, and graduates with genuine competence in both are among the most sought-after in any sector.

At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students building towards degree-level study, a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities. The foundation year develops the mathematical and computational foundations that the rest of the programme builds on. You will study the mathematical foundations of data analysis and AI, the practical implementation of analysis and machine learning systems, and how to extract useful and meaningful insight from data.

Autonomous vehicles, medical diagnostic systems, financial modelling, and environmental monitoring are among the real-world applications the programme engages with.

You will develop programming skills, mathematical understanding of algorithms and probability, machine learning and deep learning techniques, data engineering and visualisation competence, and the professional awareness to apply AI and data science responsibly and effectively.

Graduates from AI and data science programmes are in strong demand across virtually every sector: technology, finance, healthcare, retail, logistics, government, and research all need professionals with these skills. Roles include data scientist, machine learning engineer, AI researcher, data analyst, and technology consultant. Postgraduate study in AI, data science, or computer science is a natural option for those seeking specialist or research careers.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageabl…

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport lin…
