About this course

The convergence of artificial intelligence and data science is transforming how organisations understand the world and make decisions. From autonomous vehicles and medical diagnostic systems to financial modelling and climate prediction, the ability to extract meaningful patterns from large datasets and to build systems that learn and adapt is now a core capability across virtually every industry. A degree in this field prepares you to work at that frontier, combining mathematical rigour with practical computing skills and the critical judgement to apply them responsibly.

At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for those who need to build their academic foundations before entering the core degree content. The programme is designed to address the genuine scale of the challenge: organisations in both the public and private sectors are generating data at an unprecedented rate, and the value of that data depends on having people who can apply mathematical modelling and AI techniques to extract insight from it. You will develop skills in machine learning, statistical analysis, data engineering, and the programming techniques that underpin modern AI systems.

A sandwich year gives you the opportunity to spend an extended period in a professional environment, and a year abroad broadens your perspective and experience further. Work placement is built into the programme, connecting your academic development to real-world practice.

You will learn to think carefully not only about how AI systems work but about the implications of deploying them, including questions of bias, transparency, and the responsible use of data.

Graduates go on to careers as data scientists, machine learning engineers, AI developers, business analysts, and research scientists in sectors including technology, healthcare, finance, logistics, and public services. Many continue to postgraduate study to deepen their specialism, and the combination of theoretical knowledge and practical placement experience makes graduates well prepared for competitive roles in a fast-moving field.
