Architecture with Foundation
Architecture is the art and science of designing the built environment, from individual buildings to the spaces and infrastructure that shape how we live, work and move through cities. It draws on technical knowledge, creative imagination, environmental thinking and a deep understanding of the social and cultural context in which buildings are made and used. The degree at the University of Westminster prepares you for the first stage of the professional journey toward becoming a chartered architect, and this version of the programme includes a foundation year followed by a sandwich placement, giving you the additional academic preparation and professional experience that together make a rigorous undergraduate education in one of architecture's most internationally respected schools.
You will develop skills in design through studio-based work, learning to generate, develop and communicate architectural ideas through drawing, modelling and digital representation. Alongside studio practice, you will study the history and theory of architecture, building technology, structural principles, environmental systems and the regulatory and ethical frameworks that govern the profession. Westminster is a London school, and the city itself functions as a resource and a subject, offering constant exposure to the full range of architectural scales and typologies.
The sandwich placement gives you time in a professional architectural practice, building the practical competence and professional relationships that ease the transition from student to practitioner.
Graduates of the BA(Hons) Architecture typically proceed to Part 2 study, the second stage of the ARB qualification pathway, before undertaking their Part 3 professional examinations. Architecture graduates who do not pursue registration work in urban planning, interior design, heritage consultancy, project management and property development, and the spatial and analytical skills the degree builds are valued across all design-related professions.
