Architecture

Architecture is the discipline that designs the built environment, shaping the spaces and structures in which people live, work, learn, heal and gather. It demands the integration of creative vision, technical knowledge and social responsibility, asking architects to address aesthetic, functional, environmental and civic questions simultaneously. Every building is also an ethical statement about sustainability, accessibility and the relationship between the built environment and the communities it serves.

Studying architecture at degree level is the beginning of a demanding but deeply rewarding professional formation.

At the University of the West of England, Bristol, the BSc(Hons) Architecture programme is accredited by RIBA for Part 1 qualification, meaning it forms the first stage of the professional pathway toward chartered architect status. The programme runs full time over three years and places hands-on studio work at its heart, working through live projects and fieldwork that connect your designs to real people, places and problems. Sustainability, inclusivity and innovation are central concerns that run through the curriculum, reflecting the pressing responsibility architects have to address climate change, social inequality and the need for buildings that serve everyone well.

You will develop skills in drawing, modelling, digital design, structural understanding and the history and theory of architecture.

Completion of the BSc is the first stage in a long professional journey. Graduates typically progress to a RIBA Part 2 qualification, gained through a further two-year master's programme, followed by professional experience and the RIBA Part 3 examination before full registration as an architect. Along the way and after qualification, careers open up across architectural practice in studios of all sizes, public sector design roles, urban design, conservation architecture, landscape architecture, architectural research, education and the broader built environment and property sector.
