Architecture

Architecture is the discipline that shapes the built environment, determining how spaces feel to inhabit, how buildings perform structurally and environmentally, and how the design of places affects the lives of the communities that use them. It demands a rare combination of technical knowledge, aesthetic sensibility, and social awareness: the architect must understand structures and materials, engage with the environmental performance of buildings, and think carefully about the relationship between design and the ways people actually live and work. Architecture is as much a social practice as a technical one.

At Central Saint Martins, part of the University of the Arts London, this three-year full-time programme focuses on the relationships between the built environment, social interaction, and material culture, examining the role that architects play in contemporary society. The programme is part of the Spatial Practices curriculum, which reflects a broader and more experimental understanding of how space is produced and experienced. The course is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board and validated by RIBA, the two key professional bodies in UK architecture, which means it fulfils the first part of the qualifications pathway towards becoming a registered architect.

You will develop design skills, drawing and representation abilities, critical thinking, and an understanding of architectural history and theory. Studio work, model-making, research, and critical writing all feature across the programme, developing you as a thoughtful and capable designer who understands the social dimensions of the built environment.

Graduates of architecture's first degree typically proceed to a further period of study and professional experience before achieving full registration as an architect. Career paths lead into architectural practice, urban design, interior design, product design, arts and cultural institutions, and related roles in the built environment professions.
