Architecture is the discipline that shapes the built environment in which we live, work, move, and rest. It is simultaneously a technical, artistic, social, and ethical practice, requiring architects to design buildings and spaces that are structurally sound, environmentally responsible, beautiful, and fit for the lives of those who use them. Architecture demands a distinctive kind of thinking that moves between abstract ideas and material reality, between the aspirations of a brief and the constraints of site, budget, and regulation.

At Edinburgh you will study this four-year BA(Hons) programme, which is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects and provides the first part of the qualification pathway towards professional registration as an architect in the UK and internationally. The programme develops your design thinking, drawing and representation skills, technical knowledge, and critical understanding of architectural history and theory. A year abroad is part of the degree, giving you the opportunity to experience architectural education and practice in a different cultural and urban context, broadening your reference points and your understanding of how architecture responds to place.

Edinburgh itself is a profoundly architectural city, offering a rich environment for learning in studio, on site, and through engagement with the built fabric of one of Europe's finest historic capitals.

The BA at Edinburgh is typically followed by a postgraduate MArch programme, which completes the second part of professional qualification. Together, along with the required period of practical experience, these programmes lead to RIBA and ARB registration as an architect. Beyond conventional architectural practice, the skills developed in an architecture degree are valued in urban design, landscape architecture, property development, heritage conservation, interior design, and research.

Some graduates also move into adjacent creative and built environment professions where spatial, visual, and technical thinking is an asset.
