Architecture

Architecture is the discipline concerned with the design of the built environment, from individual buildings and interiors to urban spaces and landscapes. It demands both creative vision and technical rigour, bringing together art, engineering, environmental science, history, philosophy, and the social sciences to ask fundamental questions about how people should inhabit the world. Architecture has always reflected the values and aspirations of the societies that produce it, and studying it develops not just design skill but a deep sensitivity to context, culture, and consequence.

At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, providing a supported entry into architectural study before you advance to the full degree. The foundation year develops the drawing, model-making, visual thinking, and design fundamentals that form the basis of architectural education. Brighton's location gives the programme access to a rich architectural context, from the city's historic buildings to its contemporary design culture, and the programme encourages engagement with local and regional built environment issues alongside broader theoretical study.

You will develop skills in design studio practice, architectural history and theory, structural and environmental technology, and professional practice.

Graduates of the first stage of architectural education, Part 1, which this degree provides, typically go on to work in architectural practices while pursuing Part 2 study. The route to qualification as an architect registered with the Architects Registration Board requires further study, but Part 1 graduates also work in related fields including planning, urban design, interior design, project management, heritage, and construction management. Architecture also provides a strong foundation for careers in fields beyond the built environment profession.
