Architecture at RIBA Part 1 level is the first stage of a long and demanding professional journey, the foundational degree that prepares you for the full sequence of education and practice required to become a registered architect. RIBA Part 1, as the qualification is known, develops your understanding of design thinking, technical construction knowledge, architectural history and theory, and the professional and ethical context within which architects work. It is a discipline that asks you to hold together aesthetic ambition, structural logic, environmental responsibility, and human purpose simultaneously, which makes it one of the most intellectually complex of all the built environment professions.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme develops your design skills through studio-based projects that increase in ambition and complexity as the degree progresses. You will learn to generate and develop architectural ideas through drawing, physical and digital model-making, and to communicate your design intentions clearly to different audiences. Technical subjects covering structures, environmental design, and construction technology are woven through the curriculum alongside architectural history and theory, giving you the contextual and intellectual grounding that a serious architectural education requires.

Part 1 is followed by Part 2, typically a two-year postgraduate qualification, and then a period of professional experience and Part 3 examination before full registration. The three-year degree is therefore the beginning of a longer professional formation rather than a complete qualification in itself.

Graduates from Part 1 programmes go on to Part 2 studies at the same or different schools of architecture, or into architectural practice as part 1 assistants while completing their Part 2. Some move into related fields including urban design, project management, or architectural research.
