Architecture

Architecture is the discipline that shapes the built environment in which people live, work, learn and socialise. It encompasses the design of buildings and spaces from initial concept through technical development, planning, construction and occupation, drawing on art and aesthetic judgment, structural and environmental engineering, planning law, materials science, social history and the evolving needs of the communities that buildings serve. Architects must think visually, spatially, technically and ethically, and must communicate their ideas to clients, engineers, contractors and planning authorities.

At Northumbria, this four-year extended programme provides additional time and breadth for students to develop the design skills, technical knowledge and critical thinking that architecture education requires. The extended format allows you to build a stronger foundation before the more intensive design studio work of the later years. The programme includes a year abroad, which is an important dimension of architectural education, exposing you to different building traditions, urban environments and design cultures.

You will study design studio projects, architectural history and theory, building technology, structures, environmental performance, professional practice and the social and ethical dimensions of architectural design. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points.

This programme typically leads to Part 1 of the qualification pathway toward registration with the Architects Registration Board. Graduates proceed to further study at Part 2 and Part 3 level, and to the professional examination required for full registration as an architect. Careers in architecture span residential, commercial, public sector, conservation, urban design, interior architecture and landscape architecture, as well as related roles in planning, construction management, design research and academia.
