Architectural Technology

Architectural technology is the discipline concerned with the technical design and delivery of buildings, sitting between architecture and building engineering to ensure that architectural intentions are translated into buildings that perform well, comply with regulations, and are constructed to high standards. Architectural technologists work on the detailed technical design of buildings, producing the drawings and specifications that contractors use during construction, and they play a key role in ensuring that buildings meet the increasingly demanding standards for energy performance, structural safety, and accessibility.

At London South Bank University, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year and offers an option to complete the third year in a paid professional work placement. Students have secured placements and graduate roles at companies including DHA Architecture, Robert Davies John West Ltd, and WSP, giving you direct evidence of the professional pathways the programme opens. You will study building technology, structural systems, environmental systems, construction law, project management, and the software tools used in contemporary building design and documentation.

Architectural technology graduates work as architectural technologists and technicians in architectural practices, engineering consultancies, construction companies, and local authority planning and building control departments. The combination of technical design knowledge with construction practice understanding is valued across the built environment sector, and the professional placement significantly strengthens graduates' employability. Many graduates also continue to further professional study towards full Chartered Architectural Technologist status through the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists.
