Architectural Technology
Architectural technology is concerned with the technical design and realisation of buildings. While architects typically focus on the spatial, aesthetic and social dimensions of design, architectural technologists specialise in the technical knowledge needed to make buildings work: the structure, building services, thermal performance, acoustic properties, fire safety, materials specification and construction details that turn a design concept into a buildable, safe and functional building. It is a discipline that requires both design sensibility and rigorous technical understanding, sitting between architecture and engineering in the broader construction professions.
This three-year full-time degree at the University of Westminster includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in the construction or architectural sector as part of the programme. The degree is design-led, developing your skills in architectural composition alongside technical analysis and business and management knowledge through studio projects that simulate realistic professional briefs. You will develop competence in structural principles, building physics, environmental services, construction technology, specification writing and the regulatory frameworks that govern building design and construction.
Graduates are prepared for professional roles as architectural technologists and architectural technicians in architectural practices, construction companies, project management consultancies, housing developers, local authorities and infrastructure organisations. Chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists is the professional standard for the field, and the degree provides a strong foundation for that route. Graduates also work in related roles in building information modelling, sustainability consultancy and technical project management.
Further study at postgraduate level in architectural technology, sustainable design or construction management is an option for those seeking specialist expertise or research careers.
