Architectural Technology

Architectural technology is the technical and design discipline concerned with ensuring that buildings are designed, documented, and delivered to the highest standards of technical performance. While architects focus primarily on the creative and aesthetic dimensions of building design, architectural technologists are the specialists who resolve how buildings actually get built: how structures work, how insulation and weatherproofing are detailed, how building services are integrated, how materials perform under the demands of use and climate, and how design intentions are translated into construction documents that contractors can follow. In practice, architectural technologists and architects work closely together, and the distinction between their roles is often blurred in smaller practices.

At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year programme is designed to develop the full range of technical, design, and professional competencies that an architectural technologist needs. You will study building construction technology, structural principles, environmental and energy performance, building information modelling and digital tools, architectural history and theory, and the legal and contractual frameworks of building development. Studio-based project work runs throughout the programme, requiring you to apply technical knowledge to real design challenges and to produce the detailed and coordinated drawings that technical practice demands.

Graduates pursue chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, the professional body that sets standards for the discipline and whose chartered status is widely recognised by employers.
