About this course

Architectural technology is the technical and professional discipline that bridges the gap between architectural design and building construction. Architectural technologists take responsibility for the technical specification, detailing, and coordination of building projects, ensuring that designs are not only creative but also buildable, compliant with regulations, and performed to the required standard. The role has become increasingly central to the construction industry as buildings have grown more complex and as sustainability, digital technology, and changing regulations have raised the technical demands on design teams.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, meaning it provides a direct route toward professional membership and chartered status. You will develop skills in design, building law, project management, and construction technology, learning to read and produce technical drawings, specifications, and building information models. The curriculum covers structural systems, environmental performance, construction materials, building services, and the regulatory frameworks that govern what can be built and how.

The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, meaning you will gain significant professional experience before you graduate and may also study in an international context. The sandwich year in particular is a defining feature: you will work within a practice or organisation for an extended period, developing the professional confidence and technical competence that employers value.

You will graduate with the practical skills, regulatory knowledge, and professional outlook needed to work effectively in an architectural practice, construction company, consultancy, or local authority.

Graduates of architectural technology go on to work as architectural technologists, building information modelling coordinators, technical designers, project managers, and building control officers. Progression to chartered status with CIAT is the main professional route. Many graduates also move into broader construction management, property development, or building consultancy roles.

Postgraduate study is available for those who wish to specialise in areas such as sustainable construction or digital design.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links ma…

A great decision
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the final show is a proper platform β€” industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant …
