Architectural Technology

Architectural technology is the technical practice at the heart of the construction process. Where architects provide creative vision and spatial design, architectural technologists are the specialists who translate that vision into detailed, buildable reality, producing the technical drawings, specifications, and information that allow buildings to be constructed to the standards required by regulation, client, and contractor. It is a discipline that requires both technical rigour and a deep understanding of materials, construction methods, building regulations, and the increasingly complex requirements of sustainable construction.

At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time degree is taught in a city undergoing significant redevelopment, giving you direct access to live construction projects and the professionals working on them. The curriculum develops your skills in technical drawing, building information modelling, construction technology, project management, and the regulatory and sustainability frameworks that govern modern construction. The sandwich placement year provides extended professional experience in practice, where you can work on real construction and development projects, and work placement is embedded throughout.
